Offensive domination seems to be the key to Columbia College’s winning streak.
The Cougars’ offense spent another game monopolizing play in its 4-0 win against Central Methodist College on Saturday at Owens Soccer Stadium. Columbia College (9-2) pushed its winning streak to seven with its fifth shutout.
Steve Williams earned the shutout.
Central Methodist (3-8) nearly gave up a goal in the third minute. The Cougars’ first attempt to score was ruled a no-goal because of an offsides call.
“We can’t waste opportunities like that,” Columbia College coach John Klein said. “(Central Methodist) didn’t have too much intention offensively.”
Columbia College scored three second-half goals and got two goals from Gustavo Lopez-Cesarego.
In the 43rd minute, Lopez-Cesarego opened the scoring when he headed a ball past goalie Brad Bolton.
“At the beginning, the defense was very close, very organized,” Lopez-Cesarego said. “Later (in the game) we had to do our work, and we got some goals.”
Columbia College had three goals on seven shots in the second half.
“We were looking for guys to bring energy and movement to the game in the second half,” Klein said.
Ben Boehner began second-half scoring on a high, 25-yard free kick that sank out of Bolton’s reach for the Cougars’ second goal.
Juan Pablo Irrera and Stephen McMullen also scored.
