If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’s what several of you have told me in the past few weeks. There is a lot to like about today’s Missourian.
Still, the first draft of the New Sunday Missourian that you’ll receive next week will be different.
Why bother?
The Missourian needs to experiment with ideas that will better reflect our communities and help citizens act on what they’ve learned. We can’t – or at least I can’t – get better by simply assuming everything is OK. So much of our world is changing. Columbia’s values as a community may not change overnight, but the ways they are expressed move almost daily. The information you receive needs to reflect those changes.
We get better by constantly challenging assumptions. You have helped me do that in the past month. From the original plan for the New Sunday Missourian, we’ve added a half dozen items based on ideas from readers. I also have the benefit of a tremendous staff with a passion for this project.
The task, for them and for me, will be to give you a better newspaper, not just a different one. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks in advance to the groups who have agreed to give feedback at churches and with phone surveys, and special thanks to our Internet Reader Circle, a group of about 30 who we’ve been leaning on for advice for weeks.
