Hickman’s performance Tuesday makes it difficult to picture losing.
The Kewpies girls’ soccer team plays Glendale in the quarterfinals of the Class 2 state tournament at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tiger Sports Complex in Waynesville.
If the Kewpies (19-3-1) advance to the semifinals, they will face the Nerinx Hall- Ursuline Academy winner at 6 p.m. on June 4 in Fenton.
Hickman easily won the sectional title, defeating Fort Zumwalt West 5-1 on Tuesday in Jefferson City.
Glendale (15-6-3) beat Rolla 4-0 in Springfield, Mo.
Amy Bolerjack said it has been exciting because she has never made it this far with Hickman.
Her sister, Jodi Bolerjack, said even though she thinks the game won’t be as easy as the sectional title match, the Kewpies’ recent performance and having beaten the Falcons 3-1 on April 21 make her confident. She also said scoring early is a key.
“A quick start is always helpful,” Jodi Bolerjack said. “It gets us motivated and takes the pressure off.”
Bolerjack scored 31 seconds into the game Tuesday. Janelle Cordia added a goal fewer than two minutes later.
Hickman coach Sandy Paulsen, who will retire after the season, said she wants to spend time with the team as long as possible. She said she will treat the next game the same way she does others.
“We just do what we can do there,” Paulsen said.
She said putting pressure on the ball, making good passes and reversing the ball are keys.
“They (Glendale) are physically tough team, and we’ve got to be prepared,” Paulsen said. “We need to make sure we play our game.”
