Mavs stuggle with more than pitching

Unfortunately for the Mavericks, Derrick Peoples is only one person, because he was the Mavericks' only source of offense in the second game.

The Mavericks center fielder had the team's only hit and run as Gateway won the back end of the doubleheader at Taylor Stadium, 6-1.

The Mavs (1-5) had no solution for Gateway starter Joe Dooley (1-1), who pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit and one unearned run.

With the score tied at 1, Mavericks starting pitcher Shane Roelle (0-1) gave up consecutive singles to Jimmy Reiter and Tony Coyne. His night was over after walking Greg Stevens to load the bases.

Jason Elkins struck out the first batter he faced, but managed to let in two runs by walking Jake Bollig and hitting Brad Bauder in the shoulder to give Gateway a 3-1 lead.

The Mavs scored their only run without a single hit. Peoples started the inning with a walk, stole second, and scored on an error by second baseman Coyne, who charged a grounder but let it roll under his mitt.

The Grizzlies (1-5) added three runs in the bottom of the seventh off reliever John-Paul Glascock to put the game away for good. After Coyne and Stevens singled, Warren drove both of them in with a double off the right field wall.

Bauder added an RBI double to provide the game's final margin. Grizzlies catcher Wayne Astrauskas singled with Bauder in scoring position, but he was thrown out at the plate by Blake Blase. Blase had another outfield assist in the third inning when he threw out D.J. Dailey at home on a similar play.

Peoples doubled with two outs in the bottom of the fifth for the Mavericks' only hit. Mid-Missouri also reached base via the walk three times.
