The Mid-Missouri Mavericks couldn’t prevent the sweep.

The Mavericks couldn’t hold off the River City Rascals on Sunday at Taylor Stadium, losing 11-9.

Ahead 9-8 in the top of the ninth inning, the Mavs players lined up at the edge of the dugout to watch Justin Christian hit a three-run double for the winning runs for the Rascals.

The Mavericks had led 8-3 after scoring five runs in the seventh. The Rascals tied it in the eighth. Mid-Missouri came back in its half of the eighth when George Stricker’s single drove in Derrick Peoples to give the Mavericks the lead again.

The Mavs didn’t score until the third inning when Ray Goirigolzarri hit a double and later scored on a single by Samone Peters.

The Rascals, meanwhile, started off with a bang. Josh Ury hit a single and Brody Jackson hit a double and both scored on Zack Riera’s home run to right field in the first inning.

Stricker hit a three-run home run and Nick Saunders hit a two-run home run for the Mavericks in the seventh.

The Mavericks walked three straight batters and committed two errors in the Rascals’ five-run eighth.

The Mavs had four pitching changes including two in the eighth inning. Starter Kyle Nevels threw three innings before Steve Soja relieved him. Anthony Kozol relieved Soja in the seventh and Luis Reyes and Justin Craker pitched in the eighth with Craker finishing the game.

The Mavs had 15 hits and three errors in the game.

“You can’t dwell on bad experiences,” Soja said. “You just take it one pitch, one outing at a time. If you can put a string together you are going to be successful.”

Soja, whom the Rascals cut last week, was playing his first game for Mid-Missouri along with Goirigolzarri.
