PrintThe California man who was fatally shot Thursday by a Missouri State highway patrolman was being sought by a Florida sheriff’s office in connection with a double homicide.
The patrol said Friday morning that the Hillsborough County, Fla. sheriff’s office was seeking 63-year-old Michael Melberg of Solana Beach, Calif., for questioning in the double homicide of his ex-girlfriend, Lorelei Fairall, and her boyfriend, Michael Moore. Hillsborough County deputies found the victims shot in their apartment.
According to a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office press release Friday, “Although the double homicide investigation remains active, homicide detectives believe that Melberg committed the double homicides.”
The patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the shooting. Since the investigation is still open, patrol Sgt. Sid Conklin said he could not comment on how many shots were fired, the name of the highway patrolman involved or where the autopsy is being performed.
The Troop F highway patrolman stopped Melberg’s car at 6:55 p.m. on I-70 near Kingdom City because it matched the description of a car that a fellow motorist told police was being driven by a man flourishing a weapon, the patrol said. Upon stopping, Melberg reportedly got out of the car carrying a handgun and rushed toward the patrolman who ordered Melberg to drop the gun. When Melberg did not respond and continued toward him, the patrolman shot him, the patrol said.
The patrolman informed his troop headquarters that he had been involved in a shooting at 6:56 p.m. He was not injured and has been placed on routine administrative leave until the completion of the investigation.
