Missouri’s Marcus Mayes, a freshman, finished second in the 800 meters in College Station, Texas, on Saturday and earned a place on the USA Junior Team.
He finished in 1 minute, 51.24 seconds at the USATF Junior National Championships. He will compete in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy, on July 12-16.
MU freshman Jimmie Jones finished in fourth in 1:51.60.
Mayes and Jones advanced to the finals Friday. Mayes finished second in his heat in 1:52.32, and Jones qualified in 1:53.04.
In the women’s discus, Melanie Uher placed seventh with a throw of 147 feet.
On Saturday, Tigers’ Tim Dunne, Eric Potter, Neville Miller and Conrad Woolsey participated in the Northern Iowa Last Chance Olympic Qualifier meet.
Miller ran a personal best 1:48.64 in the 800.
Thirty Tigers were named to the Track and Field Academic All-Big 12 Conference Team.
Amanda Bales and Jenny Bybee were named to the 2004 CoSIDA All-America Team.
Bales, a sophomore, earned first-team honors with a 3.91 grade point average. She is an eight-time All-Big 12 athlete and a Big 12 champion in the distance medley relay.
Bybee, a junior, was named to the second team after having a 4.0 grade point average. In the high jump, she was an NCAA qualifier and finished fourth in the NCAA Mideast Regional.
Gary File, a senior javelin thrower, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
Jason Edmonds, a high jumper, was chosen to receive the NCAA postgraduate scholarship. Edmonds, a senior, is the seventh Tiger in five years to win the award. The grants of $7,500 are awarded three times a year for fall, winter and spring sports.
