Gunfire injures 2 in Harrisburg burglary

A burglary that left two people injured with shotgun wounds early Sunday morning in Harrisburg appears to be related to domestic violence, police said Monday.

“There is a domestic violence element to it,” said Sgt. Tom Reddin of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department. “The guy who came into the residence shooting is apparently the estranged husband of a woman in the house.”

According to a press release, Boone County Sheriff’s Department deputies were notified of a burglary with gunshot victims just before 4 a.m. Sunday. A man broke into a home in the 100 block of Harris Street, shot a man and then shot himself in the head, the release said.

Reddin said he did not know the conditions of those injured, but said it was his understanding the man who shot himself in the head will survive. The other injured man was shot in the arm, and his injuries were not life-threatening, the release said.

The investigation is ongoing, Reddin said, and no names will be released unless an arrest is made. At that time, the sheriff’s department will release the name of the person arrested.

“An arrest probably won’t be made until we have a chance to interview the other individual in the hospital, review all the facts and talk to everyone that we can,” Reddin said.
