PrintEven though a tougher course was the site of the second day of the Coca-Cola Junior Championship, the challenge didn’t faze Drew Weir.
Weir, 16, shot a par 70 at A.L. Gustin Golf Course on Wednesday for a two-day 139 total to the 15-17 division by nine strokes
L.A. Nickell Golf Course, which hosted Tuesday’s round, features a lot of straightaways, but it is difficult to find a level lie at Gustin, making shot placement a high priority.
“I took less club off the tee and tried to hit the fairways,” Weir said. “I avoided all the hazards, pretty much.”
Weir, who golfed for Hickman’s junior varsity team last year, will play for the varsity. He also will play varsity football, attempting to earn a spot at either defensive back or wide receiver.
“My (golf) season pretty much ends in the fall,” Weir said. “Lifting doesn’t help the swing much.”
Weir transferred to Hickman from Rock Bridge. While a Bruin, he had a spot on the golf team with Thomas Schuenemeyer, who finished second.
“I don’t like Hickman,” Schuenemeyer said, gesturing at Weir.
Schuenemeyer, also 16, shot a 75 at Gustin for a 148 total.
The courses were familiar to Weir and Schuenemeyer. Weir works at Gustin, and Schuenemeyer is employed at Nickell.
Only two others broke 80 both days. In the boys’ 15-17 division, Kyle Moser shot a 75-77-152 to finish third.
In the boys’ 13-14 division, Ethan Hannah, 13, shot 79 each day. Hannah shot 1-over-par 36 on the front nine.
He knocked in an eight-iron from 136 yards out on the fourth hole for an eagle.
“I thought it rolled pretty close,” he said. “We couldn’t see it, it was up on the hill, so we were looking behind the green for it. Then we checked the cup.”
In the 18-hole tournaments, Eric Kosmatka took home a gold medal in the boys’ 11-12 division with a 71, and Jake Abbott’s 97 was the best of the boys’ 8-10 division.
Denay Dollens won the girls’ 15-17 division with a 36-hole total of 162.
