PrintAfter a 34-16 win against then-nationally ranked Blue Springs, Hickman (3-1) jumped up two spots to No. 1 in the Associated Press’ state high school football rankings.
Blue Springs (3-1) fell to the No. 2 spot, with Rockhurst (2-1), who defeated the Kewpies 14-7 earlier this season, rounding out the top three teams.
Hickman coach Gregg Nesbitt said, despite it being the first No. 1 ranking in his 12 years at Hickman, his team will approach the second half of the season no differently.
“In terms of the No. 1 ranking, I think a case can be made for all three teams,” Nesbitt said. “Where we’re ranked in the middle of the season, certainly doesn’t mean anything when we line up against Fort Zumwalt West, Rock Bridge and Jefferson City other than an added bull’s-eye on our back.”
Friday, Hickman trailed top-ranked Blue Springs 16-13 late in the third quarter before stopping the Wildcats on a crucial fourth-down play at Blue Springs’ 31-yard line. Kewpies’ quarterback Andrew Perkins capped off the ensuing drive with a one-yard touchdown run, and Hickman dominated the rest of the way for an 18-point victory. Senior running back Brandon Kendrick finished the game with 184 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while senior wide receiver Cedric Alvis caught his fifth touchdown reception of the year.
The Kewpies have a bye week but will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Oct. 8 against visiting Hazelwood East.
