Elson Floyd, president of the University of Missouri system named Brady Deaton as the permanent chancellor of MU this afternoon.

In an e-mail to the MU community, Elson Floyd, president of the University of Missouri system, said he will announce Deaton's appointment to the top job at the biggest of the system's four campuses. The appointment hinges on approval by the University of Missouri Board of Curators.

"My decision comes after extensive consultations with elected representatives of campus constituencies and numerous individual stakeholders," Floyd said.

Floyd's move departs from his annoucement earlier that he would conduct a national search to find a successor for Richard Wallace, who retired Aug. 31.

"I appreciate fully the desire that some have expressed to have a national search for the next chancellor," Floyd said. "I have concluded, however, that we cannot afford to wait for a lengthy search process to run its course. Mizzou needs a strong leader at the helm now, with the authority, latitude and familiarity with the organization to make critical decisions required to move this university forward."

He did not elaborate on what those decisions are.

Before becoming interim chancellor Sept. 1, Deaton served as MU's provost -- the No. 2 job. Lori Franz is serving as interim provost.
