They did it for the seniors.
A seventh inning error gave the Kewpies a 3-2 win Thursday against Rolla at Cosmopolitan Park.
“We wanted this game for the seniors,” said junior Stefani Worley, Hickman’s pitcher.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, sophomore Shana White reached first with an infield hit, stole second, stole third and came home on an overthrow from the catcher to third in an attempt to tag her out.
“We stood up the whole time. Everybody was right on the fence grabbing it with their fingers,” Worley said.
White said she couldn’t believe it when she crossed home.
“At first I was dumbfounded,” she said.
The win was Hickman’s second straight.
The game was scoreless through the first four innings.
Paige Sturgeon scored in the top of the fifth for Rolla. After her infield hit to the shortstop, she was able to steal second and third base on passed balls.
Katlyn Curtis then drove her home by hitting a line drive up the middle.
The Kewpies (5-15) quickly tied the game. Dennisa Divine hit a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ashley Emmons. White then drove in Divine with a triple past the right fielder.
In the top of the sixth, Rolla loaded the bases with their first three batters but could only score one run.
“We kept our composure,” Stefani Worley said.
The Kewpies didn’t let Rolla stay up for long. Jennifer Bieberly hit a double, stole third and was able to score on a play at the plate after Worley’s sacrifice bunt.
“It was a big night for the seniors and they wanted to come away with a win,” Hickman’s coach Courtney Haskell said.
Haskell is proud of the way the team is coming together.
She said the team has had a great improvement with their communication on the field and becoming closer off the field.
Haskell doesn’t want the team to get ahead of itself. The next big is today against Rock Bridge.
“We are taking it one game at a time,” Haskell said.
