Crime report shows dramatic increases in 2003
Arrests for liquor law violations more than doubled and drug violations increased in 2003, according to a campus safety and crime report released by the MU Police Department.
Capt. Scott Richardson said more education for the officers may have influenced the increase.
“They receive training every year on how to detect drunken drivers and find alcohol violations,” Richardson said.
The department recorded 220 arrests for alcohol in 2003 — up from 107 in 2002 and 101 in 2001.
Drug law violation arrests increased from 88 in 2002 to 123 in 2003, whereas drug violations only increased by two from 2001 to 2002.
Other crimes of arson, burglary, aggravated assault and forcible sex offenses decreased. The biggest decrease was in arson offenses, with only one arson listed in 2003, compared with nine in 2002.
One case of manslaughter was recorded in 2003. There were five robberies in 2003, up from three in 2002, and one more vehicle theft in 2003 than the 2002 total of six.
The statistics were released by the department in compliance with a federal act.
