The Bruins net their 14th victory, but can’t manage 12th shutout.
If Rock Bridge had a hangover after an emotional win over Hickman, Montgomery County provided a better cure than aspirin or water ever could.
The Bruins blitzed the Wildcats 11-1. Michael Ferguson had six goals and David Hilderbrand added three goals and two assists for the Bruins.
“This was better than having practice by maybe a millimeter,” said coach David Graham. “It’s really tough to come back after that game. We didn’t play very well. But at the same time, we did what we had to do.”
The simple fact that they scored sent shouts of joy up from the Wildcats’ sideline.
Montgomery County coach Bill Wells said the goal was definitely one of the season highlights for the program, which is in only its second year.
“Chaminade didn’t score on them and we did!” he said.
“It was just awesome to score against Rock Bridge. To score against a school six times our size, it’s exciting.”
Jerry Yudt scored in the 36th minute with the Wildcats (1-8) trailing 7-0. His shot deflected off a defender and arced over the head of goalkeeper Adam Andrews.
“When they’re building a program,” Graham said, “us giving up a goal, in the grand scheme of things, is probably better for the game of soccer.”
The goal prevented Rock Bridge (14-1-2) from recording its 12th shutout, keeping the Bruins four shy of tying the school record.
“It’s really frustrating when avoidable goals happen,” defender Ben Patton said. “But we can’t dwell on it.”
Ferguson’s sixth goal ended the game in the 47th minute on the 10-goal rule. It was his 27th of the season, leaving him one shy of the school record he shares with Kevin Brooks.
“It’s just a number,” Ferguson said. “I go out every game wanting to score. I don’t think about the record. It’s only afterwards when I tally it up.”
