PrintThere were short dogs, tall dogs, big dogs and small dogs.
The frost-covered Saturday morning didn’t deter more than 100 dog-lovers of all ages from showing up for a stroll with their pooches at the 11th annual Dog Jog, hosted by MU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, class of 2006. Each year, the college’s junior class organizes the jog.
“Every year you have to think of a fund-raiser,” said Becca Tremble, organizer of this year’s event. “This one just kind of stuck.”
Participants and their pets walked either a mile or jogged a 5K course around the College of Veterinary Medicine and East Campus.
Hugh Emerson comes out to the dog jog every year. Last year he was walked alone, but this time, he brought Bruno, his chocolate lab.
“Bruno loves to run,” Emerson said. “It’s so much fun for the dogs. We call this puppy-Christmas.”
Marybeth Brown of Sturgeon hasn’t missed a dog jog in 11 years.
“It’s just a hoot to see all these people having fun,” Brown said, standing next to Chloe and Jokker, both part border collies. “It’s just a neat idea.”
Some of the profits go to support Columbia Second Chance, a local nonprofit animal rescue organization that takes in approximately 500 animals a year.
“One of the ways of placing our animals is at places like this,” Betsy Casteel, a board member at Second Chance, said. “This is just one of those hobbies that becomes an obsession.”
