NCAA announces sanctions

The National Collegiate Athletics Association will announce this afternoon what sanctions it will impose on MU for violations on the men's basketball team. Those most intimately involved with the team knew sanctions were coming today.

Stu Brown, attorney for former men's basketball associate head coach Tony Harvey, said his client was made aware that the NCAA had reached a conclusion 48 hours ago.

"We look forward to the release of the NCAA findings, but because these matters aren't yet completed, it wouldn't be right for us to take a position," he said. "We want to wait until the university has had a chance to respond."

Although they were told the decision about sanctions had been made, they were not told what the actual sanctions would be, Brown said.

Harvey resigned as the associate coach June 18, following assistant coach Lane Odom's resignation on May 11. The original NCAA report alleges Harvey gave $250 to former player Ricky Clemons, made prohibited contact with prospective athletes and misrepresented meal reimbursements.

At the time of Harvey's resignation, Brown said he "is confident that by continuing to cooperate with the university and the NCAA that he will be exonerated of the allegations against him."
