PrintA plan to construct a 13,000-square-foot, two-story building was approved at Thursday’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting. The building will be used for office space.
The property, called Providence Home Center, is located on the east side of Providence Road and north of Campusview Drive.
“There will probably be a mortgage company, a construction company, all home-related businesses,” said Wes Bolton of Allstate Consultants. Bolton was on hand to represent Providence Road Associates, the company that owns the property.
A proposal to rezone 0.32 acres of the southern portion of the property from A-1, agricultural property, to C-P, planned business, was also approved by the commission. Bolton said this area is intended for more parking spaces.
The northern portion of the property was approved for commercial use in November 2003.
Commissioners Charles Lamb and Karl Skala raised concerns about the proposed 25-foot-high parking lot lights on the property.
“I would feel a lot more comfortable if the maximum height was 20 feet,” Lamb said.
Skala said that Columbia has no lighting ordinances in place. However, because other properties have voluntarily complied with a maximum height of 20 feet for parking lot lights, it would be fair if the Providence Home Center complied as well. “That’s so one property isn’t dominating another,” Skala said. “This is an issue that is very important to lots of folks.”
