Christmas Eve brings three fires

A wood-burning stove sparked a fire that led to explosions in a shed and caused an estimated $65,000 in damage to an outbuilding and a trailer home at 9360 Smith Hatchery Road on Christmas Eve.

The Boone County Fire Protection District sent 25 firefighters and eight trucks to the blaze, which was reported at 7:45 p.m. Friday. Volunteers, with help from the Southern Boone County Fire District, quickly controlled the fire, according to a fire district news release.

Andy Poole, who recently bought the trailer, told an investigator there were gasoline cans and propane bottles in his shed.

“It’s not uncommon for people to leave their wood stoves” burning, Division Specialist Gale Blomenkamp of the fire district said. “They can lead to fire damage if left unattended.”

The Boone County Fire Protection District also responded to a Christmas Eve fire at 9500 Callahan Creek Road in northern Boone County. Volunteers arrived to find fire in a woodpile next to a trailer and close to a propane tank. A crew of 15 controlled the fire before the flames spread to the house.

County firefighters also helped the Columbia Fire Department extinguish a trailer fire at Lot 110 of Woodstock Mobile Home Park on New Haven Road just before 11 p.m. Friday. That fire remains under investigation.
