Rescue attempt fails to save dog in pond

Firefighters recovered a dog Wednesday that fell through the ice of a pond at 7071 Gillespie Bridge Road.

Andrew Cobb, who was the first firefighter to arrive, was secured to a life line, eased his way onto the ice on his stomach and made it to the edge of the hole where the dog was floating, said Division Specialist Gale Blomenkamp.

“Firefighter Cobb took hold of the animal and firefighters working on the shore pulled him and the animal back to shore,” Blomenkamp said.

Attempts to resuscitate the dog were unsuccessful. The dog was taken to Horton Animal Hospital, where it was pronounced dead.

The owner of the dog has not been located. Bystanders had called the Boone County Fire Protection District when they saw the animal fall though the ice.

The Boone County Fire Protec-tion District is reminding Boone County citizens to stay off the ice and to secure their animals so they do not wander onto partially frozen ponds.
