PrintLauren Harris, a 6-foot-3 freshman center at Kennesaw (Ga.) State, recently called home and told her father that she led the nation in blocked shots.
“Where’d you get your information?” Alvin Harris asked.
“No, dad,” she replied. “I’m leading the nation in blocks. My coach told me.”
“Send me paperwork on that,” Harris said.
A glance at the NCAA’s website and Harris’ claim was confirmed. Harris, a Hickman graduate, has totaled 87 blocks in 17 games this season, including 11 in her most recent game against Georgia College and State University.
The 87 total and the 5.1 average lead Division II women’s basketball. Carson-Newman’s Brooke Johnson is second with 81 blocks and a 4.3 average.
In her senior season at Hickman, Harris, 18, averaged 10.7 points, and her 201 blocks broke Hickman’s single-season record .
The three-year starter finished her career with 765 points and 468 blocks. Her block total ranks third all-time in state history.
Meanwhile, Lance Harris, 20, a sophomore guard at Kansas State, returned to Columbia on Saturday to face the Tigers for the fourth time in his career.
Lance, who averaged 2.1 points and 0.9 rebounds as a freshman, is averaging 21.5 minutes this season and has improved to 7.4 points and 1.6 rebounds.
Lance averaged 21.5 points his senior season at Hickman. He was a two-time All-State selection.
Logan Harris, 16, and Lyle Harris, 13, also play basketball. Logan is a sophomore forward at Hickman. Lyle is in seventh grade at Smithton Junior High School.
“I used to play against them all the time,” Alvin Harris said. “But then they all got better than me.
“They keep us running and one day we won’t have to run so much.”
