Parkway West and Parkway Central took turns traveling back and forth down Providence to face Rock Bridge and Hickman on Saturday.
The Bruins and Kewpies had contrasting days against the Parkway schools. Rock Bridge defeated Parkway Central 8-1 in its morning match and followed suit in the afternoon winning 9-0 against Parkway West. Hickman lost 5-4 to Parkway West in its early match and then lost 6-3 to Parkway Central.
The Kewpies (1-3) have lost three straight. The Bruins have won six straight and remain undefeated.
Rock Bridge’s lone loss of the day came in No. 1 singles. The Bruins’ Justin Winner lost 6-3, 6-2 to Parkway Central’s Alex Sapot. Losing his first set 6-4 in his second singles match of the day against Parkway West’s James McAvoy, Winner came back to win the second set 6-3 and won the tiebreaker 10-7 to split his matches.
“I lost to a better player this morning,” Winner said. “I also thought I wasn’t very consistent this morning. I didn’t ever get in a good rhythm today.”
Dennis Smith of Rock Bridge won the deciding match against Parkway Central, defeating Jason Kootman. In a tight match, Smith edged Kootman 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) to clinch the victory for Rock Bridge.
“We had some challenging matches,” Rock Bridge coach Ben Loeb said. “But our guys performed well today. We had Matt (Dresner) and Dennis (Smith) really step up for us against Parkway Central, and it was good to see those guys compete.”
On the other side of town, Hickman had its chances against Parkway Central but faltered late in the deciding doubles match. With the team score tied 4-4, the No. 1 doubles match decided the meet.
Hickman’s Nate Bohon and Omeed Latifi won the first set 6-4 and were up 4-3 in the second before McAvoy and Berger made their run, taking the last three games to force a tiebreaker which they won 10-2 to give Parkway West the meet.
Latifi and Bohon bounced back against Parkway Central, each winning their singles matches and combining to win in doubles.
“Parkway Central and West both had good people at the top and I think average to better-than-average guys down the line,” Hickman coach Jeff Moore said.
Hickman travels to play Jefferson City on Monday, while Rock Bridge travels to play Hannibal on Tuesday.
