More than 200 people came out to participate in the Tim J. Heinsz Memorial 5K Run/Walk held on April 16. About 50 volunteers were stationed throughout the course and also helped at the post-race gathering.

The event was held to remember the former dean of MU’s School of Law, who died last year.

Andrew Norton, a second-year law student, won the 3.1-mile race with a time of 15 minutes and 46 seconds.

“It was very successful,” said Cortney Lang, coordinator of the race sponsored by the MU Student Bar Association.

Lang said the atmosphere at the race was one of excitement but also of loss. “It was kind of a bittersweet experience for them,” she said.

The race raised about $5,000 from the registration fee and various donations. The money went to the Tim Heinsz Memorial Fund.

There are plans in the works for another race next year, with hopes of it becoming an annual event.
