Tour offers a taste of updated kitchens

Five state-of-the-art Columbia kitchens will be open Sunday on the Kitchens in Bloom Home Tour. The tour is a fund-raising event for the Boone County Council on Aging.

“The kitchens are fabulous,” said council member Stephanie Panagos said. “They’re dream kitchens that some of us just wish we could have.”

The newly remodeled kitchen of Mary and Dan Hooley’s 90-year-old home is one highlight of the tour. The couple — along with designer Angela Holloway and builder Kerry Bramon — restored the home’s “best parts,” resulting in a functional space redesign.

“We converted the covered porch into a dining room area and connected a family space with the kitchen,” Holloway said. “We wanted to maintain the integrity of the home style, because the home has historic value.”

Holloway said they wanted the kitchen to be functional and earth-friendly.

“There is a corner recycling center and pull-out shelving throughout the kitchen,” she said. Other additions include a butcher block, hard maple countertop and simple knotty-pine cabinetry. The cabinets and medium oak flooring create warmth through a variety of wood tones, Holloway said.

“We love our kitchen and our designer,” Mary Hooley said.

The featured kitchens are in the homes of Laurel and Gary McLagan, 204 Dayspring Drive; Syd and Ed Stansberry, 3716 Bray Court; Jean and David Goldstein, 206 E. Ridgeley Road; Karen Miller and David Brown, 300 W. Broadway; and the Hooleys, 503 Lathrop Road.
