Rallies for Boonville bridge begin

Citizens concerned about the future of the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge in Boonville are taking all the necessary measures to save it.

On April 22, Gov. Matt Blunt informed the city of Boonville that the Missouri Department of Natural Resources would turn the rights of the bridge back over to Union Pacific. Advocates for preserving the bridge responded by saying they were not done fighting.

The Boonville City Council voted 6-1 on Monday night to pass a resolution requiring Union Pacific to get a permit before beginning demolition and removal of the bridge. The resolution was presented to the council by the Boonville Preservation Authority.

Dale Reesman, a lawyer working to support the preservation of the bridge, told the council that passing this resolution is necessary to save the historic bridge.

“This will provide some time to help prevent other things from taking their course,” Reesman said.

A rally will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in front of the Cooper County Courthouse and continue across the Missouri Highway 5 bridge in Boonville.
