Perfect weather helped Memorial Day celebrations begin
with a flying start at the 17th Salute to Veterans Airshow.
Monday, May 30, 2005 | 12:00 a.m. CDT

Sunday was an “ideal air show day,” according to Annette Saunders, spokeswoman for the 17th Salute to Veterans Airshow. The World War I planes flew for a second day, and they can only do that when it’s calm, she said.

As the air show wrapped up events at the Columbia Regional Airport, thousands turned out to look at military aircraft both on the ground and in the air.

A flyover will be part of the Salute to Veterans

Parade, which begins at 9:55 a.m. today on Broadway in downtown Columbia. More than 130 military units will march in the parade. A military ceremony will be held after the parade at the Boone County Courthouse.

Also marking Memorial Day will be a “Peace Honors Veterans” gathering, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Gordon Shelter in Stephens Lake Park.

From 8,000 to 12,000 people attended the air show on Sunday, while 12,000 to 15,000 attended Saturday. Here is a look at the weekend event, by the numbers:

10 Number of honored guests at the 2005 Honored Guests and Volunteers Banquet on Saturday.

12 Number of booths providing food, beverages and souvenirs.

19 Number of members of the two parachute teams who jumped out of airplanes.

21 Number of rounds fired in the 21-gun salute both days as part of the “Salute to the Nation.”
