Death investigated in Fulton

FULTON — Police are investigating a possible homicide in a golf community on the northern edge of town.

Police Maj. Roger Rice said the victim was a woman in her 30s.

He would not release the woman’s name until the family has been told of her death. A cause of death was not released.

According to a news release, police were dispatched to a home in the Tanglewood Way subdivision at 9:59 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said that the Mid-Missouri Major Case Squad, a task force of state law enforcement agencies, was activated Tuesday afternoon and that 30 investigators are working on the case.

Police and investigators blocked off the upscale subdivision Tuesday evening, allowing only residents to enter the neighborhood and requiring them to provide their names and contact information. Police were moving in and out of the victim’s home Tuesday night.

The news release said investigators were gathering information about the victim and her family and going door to door interviewing neighbors.

Residents said Tuesday that they were surprised by the possible crime and the events surrounding the investigation of the death, which occurred in a brick home across the street from Tanglewood Golf Course.

“I came home for lunch, and as I drove past I just saw a bunch of yellow tape and thought it was very strange,” neighbor Amy Fleetwood said.

She said the scene is unfamiliar to Fulton, especially in a neighborhood consisting mostly of elderly couples and families who “play golf all day.”

Speculation among residents centered on whether the victim was killed during a burglary, Fleetwood said.

She said that she vaguely recalls seeing children unloading groceries in front of the home as she drove by and that the couple who lived there were new to the neighborhood, having bought the home within the past six months.

Residents of the subdivision attended a previously scheduled homeowners association meeting Tuesday night and observed a moment of silence for the victim and her family.
