Investigators have ruled a Fulton woman’s death a homicide after police found her body in her home Tuesday morning.
Fulton police found the body of 28-year-old Shawnda Reed in her home shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Jason Clark said two children were in the home when police arrived at 414 Tanglewood Way, an upscale subdivision located next to the Tanglewood Golf Course, but he declined to say whether the children found Reed’s body.
Clark said Reed lived in the home with her husband, John Reed, and their three children.
One of Reed’s neighbors, Brian Richey, said the couple had two boys and a girl between the ages of 5 and 10. He said the two boys found their mother’s body Tuesday morning. The girl was at a grandparent’s house, he said.
Clark said an autopsy was performed on Reed’s body Wednesday but declined to release its findings.
The Mid-Missouri Major Case squad, a task force of state law enforcement agencies, was activated Tuesday afternoon. Police said 30 investigators are working the case.
Richey described Reed as a “simple lady” who was protective of her children. He said the family moved to the home about a year ago and kept to themselves.
According to court documents, Shawnda Reed filed an abuse complaint against her husband in July 2001. An order of protection was filed against John Reed, 29, but the case was later dismissed.
Clark said police have talked with John Reed but declined to say whether he was a suspect in his wife’s death.
“We’re chasing those leads down and we are aware of those cases in the past, and we are looking at every possible suspect,” Clark said.
Court documents also show Shawnda Reed, who used to be known as Shawnda Kmiec, filed an adult abuse claim against Nickey Kmiec in 2000.
