Two new arrests in intersection assault

Two more arrests have been made in connection with an armed assault on two people that occurred Monday in the area of Providence Road and Business Loop 70.

The male victim was shot in the shoulder and has been treated and released from a local hospital. The female victim was held at gunpoint and forced to drive east of Columbia until an assailant exited the car.

Roosevelt Carter and Michael D. Watson were arrested Monday on suspicion of first-degree assault. Carter was also arrested on suspicion of armed criminal action. Both were being held Tuesday night at the Boone County Jail on $200,000 bonds.

John A. Overstreet was also arrested Monday in Fulton on suspicion of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and two counts of kidnapping. Overstreet was being held Tuesday night at the Boone County Jail on a $400,000 bond.

Capt. Brad Nelson said he thinks Overstreet was the man who first entered the victims’ car and held the woman at gunpoint.

Tinea L. Dixon was also arrested Monday in Fulton on suspicion of first-degree assault and armed criminal action. She was being held at the Boone County Jail before posting bail Tuesday on a $200,000 bond.

Nelson said the assault is still under investigation.

“We are certainly still looking at other persons of interest,” Nelson said. “But we do believe that the persons primarily responsible for this assault have been apprehended.”

Four injured, hospitalized after van crash

Four people were taken to the hospital Monday after a car struck a Boys and Girls Town van traveling north on Providence Road, Columbia police said.

The accident occurred at 1:25 p.m. when the driver of a red Mitsubishi Galant pulled out of a parking lot into the same lane as the Boys and Girls Town Ford E350 van. The van was carrying 11 youths and two staff members, Boys and Girls Town Director of Communications Marie McGeehan said.

Three youths from the van suffered minor injuries. Two were taken to University Hospital, and one was taken to Boone County Hospital, Columbia Fire Chief Steven Sapp said. The driver of the Mitsubishi was removed from the vehicle and taken to University Hospital Trauma Center. Police have not released the names of those injured in the accident.

The woman driving the Mitsubishi was cited by police for violation of the roadway. The driver of the van was not cited.

Suspects sought in Columbia shooting

A man was shot in the lower back about 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 800 block of Mikel Street between Clayton Street and Independence Street, police said.

The man was standing outside a residence when he was shot, police said. The Columbia Police Department would not release the name of the victim and did not know the cause of the shooting.

Capt. Brad Nelson said the department is looking for several suspects in a white four-door car, most likely a Ford Taurus. The car was seen leaving the area shortly after the shot was fired.

The victim, who Nelson said was still in surgery at 4 p.m., was taken to University Hospital. The hospital declined to comment on his condition.
