Woman faces charge of assault

The woman charged with striking 72-year-old Earlene Bradshaw in the face with a board is being held on $200,000 bond on a charge of first-degree assault.

Shawan Daniels, 31, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault after a board flew out of her hands and struck Bradshaw on Monday evening, Columbia police said.

Bradshaw was in serious condition at University Hospital on Wednesday evening. Relatives said she had internal injuries and was on life support.

Dan Knight, Boone County assistant prosecuting attorney, said Daniels, if convicted, would face a 10- to 30-year sentence, of which 85 percent must be carried out.

Daniels was also originally arrested on suspicion of armed criminal action but was not charged with it. Knight said any charge can be added if appropriate.

“Generally speaking, I have a lot of discretion at a later time in any case to amend or add charges,” Knight said.

Knight said the amount of the bond is typical for accusations of the severity that Daniels faces.

Daniels was convicted last year of misdemeanor theft and was on probation at the time of Monday’s incident. Daniels also has been arrested and convicted of three counts of third-degree assault in the past 10 years.

Police said Daniels and James Glenn, 37, got into a fight at the corner of Garth and Third avenues. Daniels left and returned with two other people with boards and sticks to attack Glenn. Justin Jones, 17, and Lee Boyd, 19, both face second-degree assault charges, which carry a sentence from one day in jail to seven years in prison.

During the attack on Glenn, police said, a board flew out of Daniels’ hands and struck Bradshaw in the face.

Although relatives and friends call the incident an accident, Columbia police said swinging a weapon constitutes assault, no matter who the victim is.

Knight said that charges against Glenn are pending because Glenn posted $13,500 bond when he was arrested and the state has until his arraignment on July 8 to file charges against him.

Glenn was arrested on suspicion of firearm possession, second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

Police said Glenn returned to the scene hours after the original incident and threatened neighbors with a gun.

Columbia police Capt. Brad Nelson said the incident is still under investigation but expects no other arrests.

“We certainly believe we have the responsible individuals in custody,” Nelson said.
