Lloyde Turner looks away as he receives a flu shot from Mary Martin at the Columbia/Boone County Health Department on Wednesday. The department said about 700 flu shots were given at the clinic. It took about 10 minutes to go through the process to get a shot. ( AARON EISENHAUER/Missourian)

About 40 people, all over the age of 65, gathered at 8 a.m. on Wednesday with their yellow forms outside the Columbia/Boone County Health Department to receive flu shots.

Some in the crowd arrived early and waited for nearly an hour for staff to open the doors.

Some wanted an extra dose, but didn’t get it.

“I don’t think she wanted me to have another,” James Antry Blythe said about his nurse.

Jim Davenport wanted to get his shot as soon as he could this season. “At 81 years of age,” he said, “you don’t fiddle around with it.”
