A 21-year-old Columbia man was killed early Sunday, police say, when the pickup truck he was driving left the road and struck a metal barrier and trees.

Columbia police said in a release that alcohol and excessive speed were contributing factors in the crash.

Police were in the process of contacting the victim’s family and had not released his identity Sunday evening.

A 20-year-old male passenger in the truck walked away from the vehicle and was taken by ambulance to University Hospital.

Police did not release his name.

Police said the truck was traveling south on Old 63 between Stadium Boulevard and Stonehill Drive when it went off the right side of the road.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the truck.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
