A Boone County grand jury on Friday indicted two Columbia men charged with stabbing a 19-year-old man last August.
The grand jury indicted Rafael Carlos Nieves, 38, and Antonio Martinez-Lara, 25, on one count each of second-degree murder and armed criminal action.
Alejandro Flores-Ramirez was stabbed to death at about 1:35 a.m. Aug. 22 near Ash Street and West Boulevard. According to the probable cause statement, Nieves stabbed Flores in the back with a butcher knife during a fight.
According to probable cause statements, police later found the knife in Nieves’ girlfriends’ vehicle and after being advised by his rights, Nieves admitted to holding the knife during the fight. Martinez told police that he stabbed Flores in the chest with a pocket knife during the same fight. Martinez, a Mexican citizen who was in the U.S. illegally after being deported in June, according to Boone County Circuit Court records, admitted to police after being advised of his rights that he had stabbed Flores twice. Police found the knife in Martinez’s pants at the time of his arrest.
Nieves and Martinez will be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Division 1 courtroom at the Boone County Courthouse.
