Bye-bye Beck bashes today, Friday

Beginning this afternoon, Columbia residents will have two occasions to mark the retirement of longtime City Manager Ray Beck.

A public reception is scheduled for 4 p.m. today in the City Council Chambers on the fourth floor of City Hall, 701 E. Broadway. A formal recognition program for Beck, 73, who has served the city in various capacities for nearly 46 years, will begin at 4:30 p.m.

The second reception is Friday from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Select, 2200 I-70 Drive S.W. Admission costs $20. Seating is still available.

Beck’s final day on the job is Friday, though he will remain on staff to help with the transition to new City Manager Bill Watkins. Beck’s official retirement date is Feb. 1.

Beck began his career with the city in the public works department, including 25 years as its director. During his tenure with the city, he has also been acting city planning director and acting water and light director. He became city manager in August 1985.
