Five suspects were in custody Monday following a car crash on Interstate 70 eastbound and the discovery of property in the vehicle that Columbia police said was stolen in several thefts in the city.

The release said the car, from Kansas City, Kan., had also been stolen.

Derrick L. Smith, 17, of Kansas City, Mo., and four juveniles ran from the scene of the crash and were arrested after a witness reported seeing them at a McDonald’s on Stadium Boulevard. It wasn’t clear why the witness called police.

Items found in the car had been taken in thefts on Highland, North Ridge and Ashwood Drives, and Forest Hill Court, the release said.

The suspects were arrested on suspicion of receiving stolen property. Smith was being held in the Boone County Jail as of Monday night. No information was available on the juvenile suspects, ages 14 to 16.

A gun was among the items found, the release said.
