Q Was Quin Snyder fired or did he resign?
A He resigned. Quin Snyder informed his team Feb. 10 that he would step down as men’s basketball coach. He made the announcement publicly during a Feb. 14 press conference.
Q Why did Snyder resign?
A He resigned because he was told that, after failing to meet expectations, he would not be allowed to coach beyond the end of the 2005-06 season.
Q What were the expectations?
A According to MU Chancellor Brady Deaton’s report to UM System President Elson Floyd, in order for Snyder to be able to coach past the 2005-06 season, Snyder was told that his team must finish in the top half of the Big 12 Conference and participate in the 2006 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. While these expectations were still possible at the time of Snyder’s resignation, in Deaton’s report, Link is quoted as saying “It wasn’t going to happen and we all knew it. ... We knew it was over.”
Q If Snyder resigned, why was he awarded a $574,000 settlement?
A These were the terms agreed upon before Snyder submitted his resignation. A settlement was first mentioned in February 2005 when Alden told Snyder that if he felt that the season was “going south,” he could submit his resignation rather than wait until the end of the season. .
Q Why did Alden send Link to speak with Snyder the day before the coach’s resignation?
A Alden said it was a mistake to send Link to talk with Snyder. Alden, according to Deaton’s report, maintained a “close, if tense” relationship with the former coach.
Q Were Deaton and Floyd aware that Link had been instructed to speak with Snyder about his future with the program?
A No. Although both Deaton and Floyd were aware of the expectations set forth by Alden, both have denied knowing that Link was to speak with Snyder. According to Deaton’s report, Alden met with Deaton, Floyd and MU General Counsel Bunky Wright in February 2005 to review the terms of the performance conditions that had been set. But Deaton and Floyd maintain that they had no knowledge of the conversation that would take place between Link and Snyder on Feb. 9, the day before Snyder left the program.
