Two Columbia residents were injured Friday night when the car they were in hit an unoccupied vehicle stalled on College Avenue between Walnut and Ash streets.

Sgt. Brian Richenberger of the Columbia Police Department said alcohol may have contributed to the accident.

The driver, 24-year-old Halie Barclay, was listed in good condition at University Hospital , while Jason Corrado, 28, the passenger, was listed in fair condition Saturday afternoon.

Barclay was driving a 1990 Saab 9000 CSE north on College Avenue shortly before midnight when she rear-ended the unoccupied 2001 Ford Explorer at Walnut Street, pushing it over a sidewalk and into a fence, according to a Columbia Police Department news release. The Saab came to rest in the opposite lane near Ash Street.

Neither Barclay nor Corrado was wearing a seat belt, according to the release.

The owner of the Explorer told police her car had run out of gas, so she turned on her flashers and was returning with some when the accident happened, the release said.

Richenberger said a witness reported the accident to police.

The incident is still under investigation, and no charges had been filed as of Saturday afternoon.
