Tigers sweep Sooners

The Missouri softball team racked up a season-high 15 hits to defeat Oklahoma 9-6 on Sunday in the second game of a two-game series in Norman, Okla.

The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and sophomore Amanda Renth hit her third career grand slam in the second to give Missouri a 7-2 lead.

Oklahoma’s Kristin Vesely hit a solo home run in the fifth. What should have been a three-run home run by Tigers’ starting pitcher Jen Bruck in the sixth became two after Bruck overran senior Janessa Roening between first and second base and was declared out. Oklahoma added runs in the sixth and seventh, but could not close the gap.

The win gave Missouri (17-11, 2-0) a series sweep, its first against Oklahoma (23-10-1, 0-2) since 1993.

MU WOMEN’S GOLF: The Tigers finished fifth on Sunday after the final round of the Mountain View Collegiate in Catalina, Ariz. The Tigers three-round total of 891 was one shot behind fourth-place Kansas State. Kansas (884) took first, followed by Nebraska (885) and Northwestern (886).

Senior Kelli Strubinger was the top individual performer for the Tigers, shooting a career-best 218 over 54 holes to tie for seventh place. Junior Stephanie Wavro shot a career-best 69 in Sunday’s final round, finishing 20th overall with a score of 222.
