Tigers baseball team drops eighth straight

The Missouri baseball team lost 8-6 to Oklahoma State on Saturday in Norman, Okla., after falling 6-4 in Friday’s series opener. The loss marks the third consecutive Big 12 Conference series that Missouri has dropped.

Missouri (16-17, 6-8) has lost the past eight games, falling below .500 for the first time this year. MU began the season ranked 10th by Baseball America, which was the team’s best preseason ranking.

On Saturday, Oklahoma (27-10, 7-4) came from behind in the ninth inning to secure the win.

Missouri took a one-run lead in the fourth after Jacob Priday hit an RBI single, then scored on a two-RBI single from Trevor Helms.

The Tigers continued padding the lead in the eighth with an RBI double from Brock Bond. Then, Gary Arndt and Evan Frey scored in the ninth.

The Sooners’ response began when Jackson Williams scored off a passed ball, and Kody Kaiser tied the game at 6 with an RBI double. Then Kevin Smith drilled a two-run home run over the left centerfield.

OU’s Nate Hammons (1-0) secured the win on the mound, while MU’s Taylor Parker (2-0) recorded the loss. The Tigers conclude the series 1 p.m. today at Mitchell Park.

COLUMBIA COLLEGE SOFTBALL: The Cougars (29-10) won the William Jewel Tournament and are approaching the longest winning streak in the program’s history. Columbia College has 23 wins in a row after shutting out opponents 16-0 in the tournament.

The team’s longest winning streak came in 1989 with 26 consecutive wins.

Columbia College beat both William Jewel and Baker 4-0 on Friday. Upsets in other games of the round-robin tournament paired the Cougars against the same teams Saturday.

The Cougars proceeded to beat Baker 5-0. Katie McMahon (11-5) recorded the win after allowing only two hits, no runs and no walks. Sarah Moreau was 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Columbia College beat William Jewel 3-0 in the championship game. Heather Robey (14-4) was the winning pitcher, striking out eight and giving up three hits and two walks.

MU WRESTLING: Sports Illustrated’s SIONcampus.com named the Tigers’ Ben Askren the best college wrestler in the country as part of its annual “U Awards.” The award honored Askren’s 45-0 season at 174 pounds, which culminated in the school’s first national title in wrestling. The SIONcampus.com award is Askren’s third postseason honor. He also won the Dan Hodge Trophy, wrestling’s version of the Heisman, and revwrestling.com named him Rev Wrestler of the Year.

Wrestling at the the U.S. Nationals in Las Vegas, Askren experienced his first losses since the 2005 World Team Trials where he placed fifth. Askren entered the tournament ranked eighth at 84 kilograms in themat.com’s freestyle standings. He began the event with a 3-0 decision over unranked Tom Meester, but then lost a 2-0 decision to No. 2 Lee Fullhart. Askren then lost in the consolation bracket to No. 10 Tony Gansen.

ROCK BRIDGE GIRLS’ SOCCER: The Bruins (5-4-1) beat St. Francis Borgia 2-1 Saturday in Washington, Mo.

Erin Bucko scored the first goal off of a penalty kick in the first half after Lauren Kelly was fouled in the box.

A lightning delay postponed the second half for nearly an hour before Kelly secured the win with an assist from Bucko in the 28th minute.

NASCAR: Columbia’s Carl Edwards finished fifth in the Busch series race Saturday at Nashville Superspeedway. He never challenged in the race and said he had problems with his car’s springs and shocks. A report on nascar.com says Rousch Racing is switching crew chiefs for Edwards starting with his Nextel Cup race today at Nashville.
