A Columbia man was arrested Saturday morning after he kicked in a door and used a screwdriver and the lid to a barbecue grill to assault a man at a residence in the 700 block of Demaret Drive, according to sheriff’s deputies.

Karum M. Marshall, 25, of Columbia, was charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree assault, armed criminal action, two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree property damage, one count of domestic assault third-degree, two counts of assault third-degree and four outstanding no-bond Boone County warrants for failure to obey orders from a judge, Sgt. Scott Ewing of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department said. Bond had not been set as of early Saturday evening, said Corrections Officer Crystal Homan.

The suspect was apparently trying to talk with the mother of his child when he tried to get inside the residence, Ewing said.

“He came over to talk to her, and things got out of hand,” Ewing said.

During a struggle with people inside trying to hold the door shut, the suspect stabbed a man inside several times in the stomach with a screwdriver, Ewing said. He then kicked in the door and entered the living room, where four adults and two children were. He somehow obtained a piece of the door frame and swung it around, ultimately breaking a window, Ewing said.

The man who was stabbed was able to get the piece of wood away from the intruder and get him out of the house, Ewing said. Once outside, the suspect picked up the lid to a barbecue grill and hit the side of the stabbing victim’s head with it, Ewing said.

Marshall was taken into custody at the scene of the incident, and everyone involved refused medical treatment, Ewing said.
