HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS’ SOCCER: Hickman and Rock Bridge met in Sedalia on Saturday morning in Game 2 of the Smith-Cotton Classic. The game ended 2-2.

Rock Bridge led 2-0 at halftime with goals from junior Erin Bucko on a penalty kick and sophomore Claire Schaeperkoetter on a header assisted by Bucko. Hickman controlled the ball in the second half, and Amanda Suddith scored off a crossing pass from Meredith Scheneman. With 10 minutes left, Kelsey McClure tied the game with a penalty kick on a tripping call.

Both teams won its opening games Friday. Hickman defeated Springfield’s Glendale, 2-0. Senior Kendall Foss scored both goals with assists from McClure and Kim Foster. Rock Bridge defeated Raymore Peculiar 5-1 with goals from Jeanna Ross, Kelsey Eckenrode, Lauren Kelly, Schaeperkoetter and Lauren Smith.

Rock Bridge tied its final game Saturday afternoon against Glendale, 1-1. Lauren Kelly scored the goal in the 16th minute off a corner kick from Erin Bucko.

With a 3-1 win against Raymore Peculiar in its final game, Hickman went 2-0-1 to win the tournament. Foster, McClure and Lindsey Williams each had goals in the third game. McClure was happy with the win, but felt her team could have played better.

“When you play a team that’s not as good, you tend to play down to their level,” she said. “We won, but we weren’t connecting on passes like we should have.”

Rock Bridge placed second, going 1-0-2 in the tournament. Bruins coach Marc Vandover was pleased with the results.

“Of course you want to win all three, but we played very competitive this weekend,” he said. “We were moving the ball well and playing hard, so overall I’m pleased with the performance. I think that’s the best we’ve played all season.”

Rock Bridge (6-5-3) faces Quincey Notre Dame at home on Tuesday. Hickman plays in the St. Dominic’s tournament this week against Francis Howell, Ursuline and O’Fallon.

McClure said the upcoming tournament will be more difficult than the Sedalia one.

“We’re all pretty worn out and ready for a rest,” she said. “But we have a good chance. We just have to step it up and play better than we did this weekend.”
