The Columbia College softball team won its first two games of the American Midwest Conference Tournament on Thursday at Springfield-Illinois.
In the first game, Columbia College shut out Harris Stowe, 3-0. Pitcher Heather Roby earned the win to move to 18-7, racking up 17 strikeouts to tie a school record set by Jamie Miller in 2003 and matched by Monica Miller in 2004.
Lindsey Williams was 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Mariam Wegmann was 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
In the second game, the Cougars defeated McKendree, 2-1. Pitcher Katie McMahon got the win to move to 16-6, giving up two hits and striking out eight. McKendree’s run was unearned.
Stephanie Kababie was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Chris Schoonover was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Columbia College (38-13) plays William Woods at 2 p.m. today in the tournament semifinals.
MU WOMEN’S TENNIS: The Tigers lost in the first round of the Big 12 Conference Women’s Tennis Championship to Oklahoma State on Thursday at Baylor. The loss ends the season for Missouri, giving it a 10-12 overall record and a 1-11 conference mark.
Oklahoma State took the doubles point early on in the contest. Yelena Olshanskaya was forced to retire in the No. 1 singles spot with a knee injury. No. 5 Chrissy Svetlic dropped her match 6-0, 6-3, and No. 6 Charlotte Bellis lost 6-1, 6-1, giving Oklahoma State the victory. The other singles matches were not finished when Oklahoma State clinched the win.
MU WOMEN’S GOLF: Junior Stephanie Wavro was named to the All-Big 12 first team Thursday.
Last week she finished second at the Big 12 Conference Championships, and she has had a 75.50 stroke average this season. Wavro had eight top-25 finishes during the 2005-2006 season and made it into the top 10 twice. During the season, Wavro set a new career low 18-hole round of 69.
The team took fourth at the conference championships and is awaiting an announcement regarding NCAA Regionals, which will be announced Monday.
HICKMAN GIRLS’ SOCCER: Hickman defeated O’Fallon (Ill.) 4-1 in the third game of pool play in the St.Dominics/Francis Howell North Shootout on Thursday at Francis Howell North.
Hickman scored early in the fifth minute when Kim Foster took a ball down the sideline and passed it to Kelsey McClure for a one touch into the goal.
Hickman then scored three second-half goals to take a 4-0 lead. Kendall Foss scored the second goal on an assist from Michelle Lowrey and scored again two minutes later. Meredith Scheneman added the fourth after receiving an assist from Katie Lappin.
O’Fallon scored in the final minute to avoid the shutout.
Hickman finished the tournament with a 1-1-1 record to move to 9-3-4 on the season.
