Tigers defeat Bears by taking early lead

Missouri beat Missouri State 2-1 on Tuesday. Senior pitcher Travis Wendte took the win and senior outfielder Zane Taylor led MU with two hits and one RBI.

The Tigers took the lead early when it scored in the top of the first. Sophomore center fielder Evan Frey advanced to first after being hit by a pitch, eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly-ball to left field by sophomore second baseman Brock Bond.

Missouri scored for the last time in the second on a single from Taylor, which scored freshman third baseman Kyle Mach from third.

Missouri State only scored in the fourth when MU starting pitcher senior Taylor Parker hit catcher Clay Coulter while the bases were loaded.

The Tigers play again today at 3:00 p.m. in Normal, Ill. against Illinois State.

Junior Nathan Culp won the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week award for the second time this season. He has the second best 2.65 ERA in the conference and remains the only pitcher to throw two shutout games. He has eight wins.

Junior pitcher Max Scherzer and sophomore outfielder/catcher Jacob Priday join Culp as players who have received this recognition. Scherzer received it in the week of Feb. 28 and Priday in the week of March 14.
