ST. LOUIS — A finance magazine has ranked four Missouri cities among the nation’s “smart” places to live.

St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbia and Jefferson City all made Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine’s top 50 “Smart Places to Live.” The list assessed economic vitality and quality of life.

Kansas City came in sixth. St. Louis was 18th, Columbia 24th and Jefferson City 35th.

The top factors in the ranking were cost of living, homes, crime, health care, education, climate and environment.

Robert Frick, Kiplinger’s senior editor, said readers were surveyed to discover what people found most important in choosing a home city.

“A lot of people do these city surveys, but we thought, ‘Isn’t where you’re going to live the most important economic decision you’re going to make?”’ he said.

Kiplinger’s sent writers to assess the cities that fared best in those specific categories. They toured with land brokers to assess the housing situation, met with city officials, walked neighborhoods and talked to residents.

Kiplinger’s Top 10: Nashville, Tenn.; Minneapolis/St. Paul; Albuquerque, N.M.; Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Kansas City; Asheville, N.C.; Ithaca, N.Y.; Pittsburgh; Iowa City, Iowa.

The entire list of 50 cities will be published in Kiplinger’s June issue.
