Rock Bridge sophomore Lauren Borduin won the state championship in the girls’ 800-meter run at this weekend’s state championship track and field meet in Jefferson City. Her time of 2:09.98 was .20 seconds away from the state record, set in 1992.
Borduin also placed third in the 1600-meter run.
But neither Rock Bridge nor Hickman placed in the top 10 in team points at the meet.
Despite a boys’ team that failed to receive a point, Hickman coach Steve Kissane said he felt this year’s meet was still a good experience. With a squad that only has one senior, he is already looking forward to next season.
“We had some folks, sophomores like Sam (Masters), get here and get a smell and get a sense of what this is about,” Kissane said.
Sophomore Asia Walker was a bright spot for the Hickman girls’ team, which finished 22nd in the team standings. Walker placed fourth in the triple jump on Friday, and placed third in the long jump on Saturday. Kissane said she and Emily Young are veterans of the state meet, and that they helped lead the team to this year’s championships.
Rock Bridge coach Neal Blackburn said he is also looking forward to next year.
“Anytime we have some kind of success in the season and then come back for the next, you want to build off that,” Blackburn said. “Success breeds success.”
Rock Bridge’s boys’ team placed 46th, with its only points from a sixth-place finish in the 4x200-meter relay race. The girls’ team fared better, placing 15th. Blackburn said that there was not division among teammates. “They pay attention to what happens on both sides.”
Hickman and Rock Bridge have been practicing on the same track for the past several weeks. Blackburn said that the teams developed a camaraderie that carried through to the state meet. Blackburn noticed players from the two teams wishing each other luck before races.
Overall, Blackburn had one thing to say about his team. “I’m extremely proud of them.”
Hickman coach Kissane said, “They worked hard this season, and the state meet is their reward for that.”
