School’s out at last for the 17,000 or so students in the Columbia Public School District. At Parkade Elementary School on Wednesday, students competed against their teachers in the annual volleyball game.

The district has five summer programs, the largest being the Summer Adventure Program that starts June 12. Enrollment so far is about 6,200 students, said Cheryl Cozette, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

First in the summer lineup, however, is the Minority Achievement Committee, or MAC, Scholars Summer Academy. The residential program at MU, June 5-16, is for incoming 10th-graders.

The district’s Summer Enrichment Program will be held in two sessions: June 12-30 at Fairview Elementary School and July 17-Aug. 4 at Smithton Middle School.

And for the French hornists, flutists and other musically inclined students, the summer music program will run from July 5 to 21.
