Lots in common for leaders

Sunday, June 4, 2006 | 12:00 a.m. CDT; updated 4:46 p.m. CDT, Monday, July 21, 2008

In the first round of the 48th annual Phil Cotton Invitational, being tied for the lead with first round scores of 66 isn’t the only thing John Kelly and Ben Godwin have in common.

Both can claim membership on the Missouri golf team. Godwin graduated in 1992, and Kelly is heading into his senior year. Another similarity the players share is that they have both won this tournament in the past. Godwin won it in 1997 and Kelly won just two years ago.

In the senior division, Columbia’s David Teel is tied for the lead with Rich Horn of Springfield. Both shot a 67.

Joining Saturday’s leaders are 101 other players whose entry fees go towards Mizzou men’s golf fundraising efforts. The two-day tournament, held at A. L. Gustin, will conclude today with tee-times starting at 7:30 a.m.
