Two road projects received a $7.5 million shot in the arm Thursday as part of a federal spending bill set to take effect in October.
Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo., secured $4.5 million for an overpass at Gans Road as part of a plan to extend the road past MU’s South Farm property towards Rolling Hills Road.
The city, state and MU signed an agreement in 2005 for extending the road. The South Farm property is the planned location for Discovery Ridge, an agricultural laboratory and research park.
The extension, including a planned interchange at U.S. 63, would act as a new north-south thoroughfare.
The other $3 million was secured by Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., for the extension of Stadium Boulevard. The extension is expected to cost at least $44 million and has long been seen as a priority for the city to cycle east-west traffic around the city.
In the past, city officials said both roads would act as pressure valves meant to ease heavy traffic on U.S. 63 and Interstate 70.
