Bruins recruit ready to play for Bulldogs

The tight end gave his quarterback the signal.

Rock Bridge quarterback Logan Gray stood up and tossed his baseball hat to tight end Aron White, who put it on and smiled.

“I’m a Georgia Bulldog,” White said.

As a top-20 recruit at tight end, White had narrowed down his choices to MU, Arizona State University and the University of Georgia. He announced Wednesday afternoon that he will join his teammate Gray in Athens.

Although White, who is ranked No. 15 among tight ends nationally by rivals.com, received many offers, he did not let the attention influence his work ethic, coach A.J. Ofodile said.

“A lot of kids sit back, relax and enjoy it,” he said. “He turned it on because he knew what was out there for him.”

Ofodile, who played tight end at Missouri and for the Baltimore Ravens, said he knew White was talented the first day he saw him. The two met at White’s AAU basketball practice when White was a freshman.

“He was a kid who was nowhere near developed, nowhere near polished,” Ofodile said, “but he could make his body do whatever he wanted to do.”

Ofodile said he thought “it would be real hard for him not to be a Division I guy.”

His coach was not the only person White mentioned during his press conference in the lobby of the Rock Bridge auditorium.

“This has a lot to do with my upbringing,” he said.

Tammy White, Aron’s mother, said her son was raised in the church. She said she makes sure he treats people well and does things ethically. “Athletics always came after schoolwork,” she said, “and if you didn’t maintain your grades, you couldn’t play.”

Although, she said she knew her son was athletically gifted, she truly realized how special he was when coaches called.

Aron White said he spoke to Georgia coach Mark Richt last week. He considered making official visits but decided to commit early and focus on his last Rock Bridge football season.

Gray and White are not the only Division I talent on the Bruins. Running back Scott Concannon has committed to the Northwestern Wildcats, and two other players are listed on national recruiting Web sites.
