Missouri freshman wrestler Max Askren is participating in the FILA Junior World Championships in Guatemala. He is competing in the 96-kilogram (211 pound) weight class. Askren’s older brother, Ben Askren, won the 2006 NCAA national title at 174 pounds.

The championships started on Tuesday and will end on Sunday.

HICKMAN GIRLS’ TENNIS: The team defeated Mexico 8-1 on Thursday to get its first win of the season. The Kewpies (1-2) open the Great Eight tournament against Belleville West at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hickman.

HICKMAN SOFTBALL: The Kewpies (2-2) defeated Macon 10-0 in five innings on Thursday. Laura Miller was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs, and Shana White was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs. Taylor Cowan was the winning pitcher.

HICKMAN VOLLEYBALL: Marie Schulte’s six aces led the Kewpies (1-1) over Rolla. Hickman won 25-20, 25-21.

KANSAS FOOTBALL: Coach Mark Mangino has signed a new five-year contract worth about $1.5 million a year.

The university announced the deal Thursday, locking up Mangino through the 2010 season. His previous contract was set to expire at the end of the 2008 season.

Under the new contract, Mangino will earn a base salary of $220,000. The university will also pay for “professional services rendered,” such as the production of TV and radio shows and product endorsements, which boost the salary to $1.5 million per year.

The contract also includes provisions for incentives that could total as much as an additional $650,000 in any one year.

The new deal is retroactive to Jan. 1, replacing a previous contract that was to pay about $650,000 annually.

Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins called the deal “a significant day in the history of the Kansas football program” and said he was happy to make the announcement before Saturday’s season opener against Northwestern State.

“Mark Mangino has done an excellent job reviving this program,” Perkins said in a news release. “Chancellor Hemenway and I think it’s important that we not only reward Mark for the job he’s done, but also give him the support and stability he needs to continue to turn this football program into a top-tier program.”

Mangino in his four seasons has gone 19-29, but the program shows many signs of being on the rise. The Jayhawks earned bowl bids in two of the past three years and have sold more than 28,100 season tickets, surpassing a record that has stood since 1969.

“I want to thank Chancellor Hemenway and Lew for their strong and continued support,” Mangino said in a written statement.

“We all share the same vision for excellence in our football program. I appreciate their support of our mission to make KU football a top-ranked program, both on the field and in the classroom.”
