It took 12 seconds for East St. Louis to score the first points in its football game against Hickman on Friday night.

Joseph McCaskill took the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown as the Flyers defeated the Kewpies 39-0.

"I found a hole up the middle and just followed (lead blocker) Jermel Reed to the house," McCaskill said.

The Hickman defense held the Flyers in check for the rest of the first quarter, but the Flyers broke the game open in the second quarter.

About a minute into the quarter, Flyers running back Nicholas King scored on an 8-yard run. Then two big plays put the Kewpies in a big hole.

First, wide receiver Jerell McDaniels got loose for his only catch of the game, a 36-yard touchdown grab. Then on East St. Louis’ next posession, after Hickman had fumbled the snap on a punt attempt, King broke loose for a 35-yard score, giving the Flyers a 26-0 halftime lead.

Hickman running back Rob Heath fumbled on the first play from scrimmage in the second half, and the Flyers capitalized when quarterback Derrick Johnson connected with wide reciever Terry Hawthorne for an 18-yard score.

The scoring came to a close when McDaniels reached the end zone on a double reverse from 19 yards out.

Hickman used the final 11 minutes and 44 seconds on a 16-play drive that ended with an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal from the Flyers' 15.
